Commune du district de Lausanne, au nord de l'agglomération lausannoise, à la lisière des bois du Jorat, se composant du Petit-Mont, du Grand-Mont et des Planches. Première mention en 1237 (Monte super Lausannam). 514 habitants en 1764, 658 en 1798, 1000 en 1850, 1099 en 1900, 1383 en 1950, 2692 en 1970, 5182 en 2000. Au Moyen Age, Le Mont-sur-Lausanne, divisé en plusieurs petits fiefs, dépendait de l'évêque de Lausanne. Il fit partie du bailliage bernois de Lausanne de 1536 à 1798, puis du district de Lausanne. Au XVIIIe s., la commune était administrée par un grand gouverneur, un maréchal et trois petits gouverneurs (un par hameau). Au militaire, ses habitants marchaient sous la bannière de la Cité. La chapelle de Saint-Jean l'Evangéliste, filiale de la paroisse Saint-Paul à Lausanne, était située près du cimetière actuel. Après la Réforme, Le Mont-sur-Lausanne. devint paroisse (foraine en 1545, avec pasteur résident en 1811). Le temple actuel, en Coppoz, date de 1797, la cure de 1835. Dès 1906, le village fut relié à Lausanne par le tramway. La grande salle du Petit-Mont fut inaugurée en 1955, le nouveau centre administratif et scolaire en 1991. Depuis 1960, la commune qui vivait principalement d'agriculture, devint une commune résidentielle et industrielle à la suite de la création des quartiers de villas du Petit-Mont, des Planches et de la Perrause et des zones industrielles du Rionzi, de Budron et de la Clochatte.
